Understanding the reality about depression, however, can really save lives – literally. Here’s why…
First, we need to be clear about one important fact: People do not experience depression in the same way. In fact, while anyone can experience bouts of depressive moods triggered by things going on in their lives, people who suffer from clinical or even mild depression have biological explanations for these mood swings. The “depression gene” was once thought to be the real cause of inherited mood disorders like depression. Now scientists know that this isn’t the case – and that depression results from something else going on in the brain. Other neurotransmitters, genes, neurological processes and environmental triggers all work together to affect brain chemistry and the mood, causing varying degrees of depressive episodes.

A person may feel tired and fatigued, irritability, trouble concentrating, loss of interest in hobbies or other activities, appetite changes, sleep disturbance or difficulty staying awake. Some symptoms of clinical depression may also include insomnia, excessive thoughts or activity, muscle aches or tension, restlessness, hot flashes, restlessness and sweating. These symptoms can go on as the patient suffers from depression.
So now we come to another question: How do we treat depression? There are many ways to treat depression among people suffering from this disorder. Antidepressant medications that are used to treat depression have shown good results in helping to reduce these symptoms in most people. Common antidepressants used for treating depression include Prozac (Zoloft), Paxil (Paxil) and Celexa (Lexapro). In addition to these, some newer antidepressants that are being studied now include Effexor (Paxil), Celexa (Lexapro) and Sonata (Zoloft).
However, one downside to using antidepressants to treat depression is that they have been associated with some serious side effects. These include nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, upset stomach and other unpleasant reactions. Because of these side effects, it is often preferable for people to try complementary methods of treatment before using antidepressants. There are some herbs and vitamins that have proven to be particularly effective in helping to treat the symptoms of depression.
Some of the herbs that may be helpful for treating depression include St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum), The Passion flower (Cissampelos pareira), and Tuberculinum (Aster Oxalate). Vitamins that may help treat depression include Vitamin B12, magnesium, zinc and folic acid. When a person begins to feel the beginning symptoms of depression, he or she should avoid taking in anything that may cause him or her to become sad or frustrated out of proportion. Avoiding substances such as caffeine from coffee, tea, soda pop or other drinks is also a good idea. In addition to that, if a person experiences symptoms of sadness, frustration or anxiety when being around people who are happy, he or she should avoid being around them as much as possible.
