Release Date:
21 April 2012
Series / Stand Alone: Stand Alone Novella
My Rating For This Book:
5 Stars (It is / was actually one of my favorite books of 2012)
Synopsis:
Makenna James thinks her day can't get any worse, until she finds herself stuck in a pitch-black elevator with a complete stranger. Distracted by a phone call and juggling too much stuff, the pin-striped accountant caught only a glimpse of a dragon tattoo on his hand before the lights went out.
Caden Grayson is amused when a redhead literally falls at his feet. His amusement turns to panic when the power fails. Despite his piercings, tats, and vicious scar, he's terrified of the dark and confined spaces. Now, he's trapped in his own worst nightmare.
To fight fear, they must both reach out and open up. With no preconceived notions based on looks to hold them back, they discover just how much they have in common. In the warming darkness, attraction grows and sparks fly, but will they feel the same when the lights come back on?

I actually read this book ages ago. (August 8 2012), But the fact that I can still clearly remember it, as if I'd read it last night... speaks volumes about the impact this book had on me. I read and reviewed this book at a time, when I wasn't that big on writing full and lengthy reviews. In fact almost all my reviews dating back to August or so last year are all short and sweet. The reason for this is simply because I had not entirely gotten into the book review / blogger business yet :) But now that I have and since the Sharing is Caring Sunday Meme offers me a chance to recap on an old love... I thought I'd give this book the review it so rightfully deserves.
This is what I had to say way back when:
Ssshhheeeezzzz.... This book is so hot and I loved it. It was a little short and I really wanted it to go on longer but although it left me hanging a little it was by no means lacking in anything.
Hot, Sexy, Steamy... it's jam packed.
It was a unique story that was written so well I fell in love with the characters and I totally believed every moment.
A must read if you are looking for a quick read that gives you a thorough sexy thrill!
I know right... totally pathetic... It's not even a review... it's more like a text message, it's that short.
So anyway, back to giving this book another once-over especially put together for this amazing idea brought forth and organized by Sandra from Simply Sensational Book Fanatics.
Hearts In Darkness is brilliant! (haha) No that's not all I'm going to say... but if I left it at that... it would kind of be an #EnoughSaid- phrase.
The reason I love this book is because firstly it's written in both POV's... which I adore. It's gripping and enticing. When Makenna and Caden each walked into the elevator - they were so distracted and stuck in their own heads, each analyzing their own problems and responsibilities, they actually don't really notice each other. Now... I know that, that is very possible. I do it all the time. Sometimes I'll even drive somewhere and once I arrive - I can't even remember the drive or the music playing on the radio... so I get how this could happen...
Suddenly the power fails and the two are left alone in a dark elevator, only then noticing that they are not entirely alone. The chemistry between the two of them is so electric, that even in a blackout, they seem to be drawn to one-another.
The best part about this is that there were no - 'oh his blue eyes were like magnets bla bla...' nonsense. Their attraction to one another is buildup at a time when looks and the color of each others eyes do not factor into the equation... how refreshing is that? It's the true kind of desire and attraction... the kind we all want. Where looks and how you are dressed and how fat or skinny you are, are not even factored into the development of a relationship.
“He crowded right up into her space, pressed his body against
hers—trapping her against the glass of the door behind her, plunged his
hands into her hair until he was cupping the nape of her neck, and
devoured her lips with his.”
Now I don't want to give toooooo much away, since I really do want to encourage you to buy this freaking book... but another factor that I loved was the method and back stories that Laura Kaye used in order to bring these two together. I'm not talking about the part where they are alone in a dark elevator... what I'm talking about is the bond they seem to form when each of them are able to 'be there' for one another... to help them through... that's all I'm going to say. Anything more will spoil it and since it's a pretty short read, I need to be extra cautious because not a lot happens... but the little that does is... exceptionally hot :)Read it! If you haven't... you seriously need to catch up with those of us that have. It's short, emotional, steamy and just super perfect for a Sunday afternoon, after lunch read... lol...
